Male Testosterone Treatment

Male Testosterone Treatment: What You Should Know

If you’re thinking about male testosterone treatment, there are a few things you should know. The hormone testosterone has a major influence on a man’s physical, mental, and sexual well-being. It’s made by cells in the testicles and regulates the development of male traits like muscle strength, a deep voice, and facial hair growth.

Testosterone also plays a key role in your energy levels, bone health, and red blood cell production.

As men get older, testosterone production gradually diminishes, often with no symptoms. However, if levels get low enough, signs of low testosterone (low T) may appear. Indicators of low T include:

  • Reduced sexual desire: A decrease in libido or sexual drive can lead to lessened sexual engagement and interest, which may have a negative impact on personal relationships and satisfaction.
  • Erectile challenges: Low testosterone does not directly cause erectile dysfunction (ED). However, low levels can play a role by:
      • Lessening sexual fulfillment
      • Causing stress
      • Promoting weight gain
  • Fatigue: Lower testosterone levels can lead to tiredness and less energy.
  • Change in body composition: Bone and muscle mass could decrease, and body fat could increase, leading to a lowered metabolism. The lower metabolism can make it even easier to gain weight, leading to a vicious cycle.
    • Mood fluctuations:
      • Depression
      • Anxiety
      • Irritability

What is a Low Testosterone Level?

A blood test called a serum testosterone test can determine your testosterone level. If less than 300 ng/dL of total serum testosterone is measured, this is considered low T. To get the most accurate results, you’ll be tested early in the morning, between 7 am and 10 am after overnight fasting. Your testosterone will be at its peak during this time.

Male Testosterone Treatment Methods

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is often used to help men restore their levels and reduce the symptoms of low T. Testosterone is available in multiple forms, including both branded and generic options. These treatments are designed to supplement or stimulate the body’s natural testosterone production. There are several different forms of TRT available, including:

Topical Gels and Solutions

Applied daily to the skin, typically on the arms, shoulders, or abdomen, testosterone is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. This method is favored for its ease of use and the ability to maintain steady hormone levels throughout the day.

Transdermal Patches

Patches release testosterone into the skin over 24 hours. They are often applied to the back, stomach, upper arms, or thighs, and provide a consistent testosterone dose.

Injectable Testosterone

Testosterone injections are longer-lasting. Depending on the formulation used, they are administered directly into the muscles every 2-4 weeks.

Intranasal Gels

Intranasal gels are applied within the nostrils three times a day, providing a unique method of delivery that bypasses the skin and enters the bloodstream directly.

Implantable Pellets

Testosterone pellets are surgically inserted under the skin, typically in the hip or buttock area, and release testosterone over 3-6 months. This method offers a long-term approach to testosterone replacement.

Find the Male Testosterone Treatment for You

When considering any form of testosterone replacement therapy or medication, you’ll absolutely want to consult with a urologist who can provide a personalized assessment based on your medical history, overall health, and specific needs and preferences.
During the consultation, your doctor will discuss the risks of TRT, including:

  • An exacerbation of sleep apnea — breathing difficulties while sleeping
  • Skin reactions, including acne
  • Urinary issue due to prostate enlargement
  • Breast tissue swelling
  • A decrease in sperm production
  • An elevated risk of blood clots or cardiovascular disease

Your doctors will also need to monitor your treatment closely to adjust dosages and manage any side effects.

The goal of low T treatment is to improve symptoms with minimal adverse effects, ensuring a safe and balanced approach to restoring hormone levels.
