Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, affects many men in South Carolina and beyond. It causes unwanted, frustrating urinary symptoms like getting up frequently during the night, strong urges to urinate, and even incontinence.
A new minimally invasive treatment is available in the Grand Strand Region, making cutting-edge technology available close to home. Aquablation uses high-pressure water combined with advanced computer imaging to accurately and quickly remove excess prostate tissue. With no incisions necessary, recovery is faster, and there are fewer side effects compared to other, more invasive procedures.
The new procedure was recently featured on ABC15 as part of Men’s Health Month.
Dr. Cooley was the first to use Aquablation to treat BPH in the Grand Strand. She says that while some robotic options take over two hours to complete, Aquablation can be done in 45 minutes. She’s excited to offer this innovative technology, stating, “There are a lot of treatments for BPH, some of them range from being done in the office to some require a full open surgery to be done. It depends on the size of your prostate, and how it looks when we look at it in the office. So, essentially this is one of the options that resects tissue and can be durable for up to 10 – 15 years, and has a big impact to get you off of medication.”

Dr. Jansen is also excited about what Aquablation opens up for men suffering from BPH, especially when it comes to its accuracy and precision. Not all treatments allow the surgeon to view the prostate completely in real-time. He says, “What we are able to do with this machine is perform an ultrasound in real-time in the operating room to outline the borders of the prostate. We can actually determine, ourselves, what areas of the prostate we want removed to make sure we remove the excess bulk while maintaining vital structures that are important for sexual function. A lot of therapies out there do impact sexual function.”
