Dr. David Rich recently completed the TULSA procedure at Tidelands WHC, making him the first in South Carolina to perform this cutting-edge treatment for prostate cancer. At Atlantic Urology Specialists, we are committed to bringing the latest advances in treatment for urologic conditions to our patients. The TULSA procedure is no exception.
TULSA, which stands for transurethral ultrasound ablation, uses an ultrasound probe to heat excess prostate tissue, effectively destroying it. The probe is robotically driven, allowing for extremely precise targeting of the tissue. During the procedure, real-time MRI allows the surgeon to see the entire prostate and create an accurate map.
After the surgeon has constructed the boundaries and determined which parts of the prostate need to be removed, the robot follows the instructions to target only the affected tissue, leaving surrounding areas unharmed. This minimally invasive procedure requires no incisions and is performed as an outpatient in a single procedure.
