Nocturia

What Causes Nocturia?

Patients could experience several symptoms after a diagnosis of congestive heart failure. Diabetes also increases symptoms. Urologists explain that the conditions increase the frequency of urination. More frequent urination could be a sign of polyuria. Below you will read about what causes nocturia.

Polyuria is a bladder condition that leads to persistent urination. The time in which the patient has the greatest volumes defines what type they have. A full review of their symptoms helps the doctors determine the best treatment. Patients may need to take part in some at-home activities to help diagnose it.

Frequent Need to Urinate

The first sign of night-time polyuria is the frequent need to urinate. Patients experience urgency each night. It wakes them up and prevents them from falling back to sleep. Doctors assess the symptoms and arrive at the most appropriate treatments.

Managing Overactive Bladder

In urology, doctors treat conditions such as overactive bladder. This condition presents similar symptoms and discomfort. Yet, the patient will experience their symptoms at night. The nocturnal symptoms are what make this illness different and stand apart.

Are There Different Types of the Condition?

Polyuria causes patients to urinate less than 3,000 milliliters within 24-hours. The condition develops in pregnant women with gestational diabetes. Patients with untreated diabetes could develop it. Excessive fluid intake causes it, too.

Nocturnal polyuria isn’t the same as standard polyuria. The patient passes higher than average amounts of urine at night. Their urination is not as excessive during daytime hours. Fluid retention causes these nighttime bathroom trips. Doctors examine nocturnal urinary frequency to diagnose the patient.

What are the Symptoms?

The most common sign is waking up often with a full bladder. The patient cannot rest because their bladder is full and urgency sets in. They have a high-volume urination cycle.

Patients experience fatigue and sleepiness because they can’t get enough rest at night. They may also develop irregular sleep cycles and won’t stay on a consistent schedule.

What Causes It?

Congestive heart failure is a common cause of polyuria. It will also lead to swelling in the legs. Doctors may recommend wearing compression socks or stockings to decrease edema. They will also recommend lowering fluid intake.

Some patients develop it because of sleep disorders including sleep apnea. Sleep apnea wakes them throughout the night because of airway constriction. This can also trigger more frequent urination. Many patients need to urinate upon waking. If they have irregular sleep cycles, they’ll urinate more at night.

Medications can play a role in causing polyuria. The most common is any diuretic. The medication pushes fluids out of the body and away from the heart. Heart failure patients experience water retention. The excessive water pushes toward their heart and hinders heart function.

How To Diagnose It?

To diagnose polyuria, doctors request that the patient keeps a urination diary. They record how many milliliters they urinate during the day and night. By comparing the volumes, the doctor determines what type of polyuria the patient has. Once diagnosed, the doctor creates a care plan for the patient to follow.

How to Treat It

The first step in treating polyuria is restricting fluids. Doctors recommend stopping all fluids at least two hours before bedtime. This can decrease the amount of urine produced each night. It can also help the patient sleep lower between bathroom trips.

Proper Medication for Water Retention

Diuretics help the patient get rid of excess fluids. The medication decreases fluid retention. Patients urinate more during the day so they can rest at night. The medications help them determine when to stop fluids and get the best results.

Improving Sleep Quality

Many doctors recommend taking naps in the afternoon. This can help the patient get enough rest if they have nocturnal polyuria. They are less likely to experience frequent urination during daytime hours. This allows them to get a better night’s sleep. It decreases fatigue and sleepiness.

Proper Elevation and Circulation

Next, nocturia doctors recommend keeping the legs elevated. Since edema is a common symptom, it is vital to keep the legs level with the heart. Patients with congestive heart failure experience edema often. It could decrease some of their cardiovascular symptoms.

By wearing compression socks, they improve blood circulation in their legs. The patients can oxygenate their legs. They can also improve soreness and muscle cramps.

Compression socks and stockings are beneficial to heart patients. They can decrease poor circulation and prevent blood from pooling in the legs. This improves mobility and prevents them from facing these hindrances. It is vital for heart patients to remain mobile and get adequate exercise. Compression socks and stocking help.

Bladder Pain and Urgency

Anticholinergic medications treat overactive bladders and decrease urgency. For patients with polyuria, they decrease bathroom trips at night. Patients can avoid the pain caused by overactive bladders and stay comfortable.

The polyuria medication may decrease the risk of a urinary tract infection. It prevents bacteria from building up in the bladder and kidneys, too. Proper treatment plans for polyuria may decrease kidney disease and failure.

Where to Get Help

Atlantic Urology Clinics provide comprehensive care for all patients. They complete examinations, tests, diagnostic care, and offer treatment. The doctors assess the patient’s symptoms and compare them to the test results. Patients with nocturia are encouraged to visit their doctor for a proper care plan now.

Patients who experience urgency at night may have nocturnal polyuria. The condition causes a higher volume of urination at night. It causes sleep disturbances, and patients experience fatigue and sleepiness.

Overactive bladder is the most common sign of polyuria. Doctors tell patients to keep a urination diary to get a diagnosis. The cause of the condition could be a multitude of things. This could be something as simple as excessive fluid intake. It could also be an underlying disease such as congestive heart failure.

When treating the condition, doctors consider better ways to address symptoms. For example, they may recommend taking naps in the afternoon. This could improve sleep quality and make it easier for patients to avoid fatigue. A proper diagnosis helps doctors create the best care plan for their patients.
